ABC known for, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get away with Murder and much more has come out with a brand new legal drama Conviction.
The new ABC program aired on October 3rd, 2016, starring Hayley Atwell, Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey.
ABC has once again come out with another strong-minded, 300 dollar shoe wearing, blazer rocking Women’s TV Show. Hayley Atwell acts as Hayes Morrison, a former first daughter, and a current drug abuser. After Mrs. Morrison was caught with possession of cocaine, she was blackmailed into directing the Conviction Integrity Unit. Headed by the New York’s District Attorney, Connor Wallace (Eddie Cahill). The CIU is a group of elite lawyers, investigators, and forensic specialists; all coming together to look at possibly wrongly convicted cases.
Hayes was constantly surrounded by media. Starting with her Father, the former President and now her mother is running for senate. She was hammered by the media day and day out, never once getting a break. In my opinion, this whole part of her mother and father’s social and political life could’ve and should’ve been taken out. With it included there were too many flips and turns to the story, making it confusing and unrealistic. Yes, it did explain why Hayes is the way she is but is unnecessary to the story line.
The show is overall lackluster at best. Directors Liz Friedlander and Rob Seidenglanz try to fit too much in an hour episode. They focused on Morrison’s life instead of the actual case at hand. It felt as if the show was not organized, or in order. Nearing the end of the case, it was as if Morrison just pulled all the answers right out of her sleeve. The ending was extremely predictable, it took me maybe half the episode to figure out how it was gonna be solved.
Critic Sonia Saraiya from Variety agreed and wrote, “Blatant attempts to rework the ‘Scandal’ template with a few different bells and whistles. The similarity of the two shows suggests that ABC is looking for a new, buzzy female-driven hit to add to its repertoire.”
